For the first time since SaxoCell started, most of our members met in real life – not virtually! – to get to know each other, exchange ideas, present initial research results and engage in conversations across all projects and platforms.

Seven months from the kick-off meeting, project leaders, postdocs, PhD students and hub members came together at CRTD in Dresden to represent our young SaxoCell community.

We spent the day presenting data gathered since the cluster kicked off, discussing preliminary results and brainstorming about what’s next. We also created some cheerful project profiles, which facilitated our exchange.

This was a great opportunity to get to know each other better and strategize about how we can develop together when SaxoCell enters its second year of implementation.

At UKD, two newborn babies have received gene replacement therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Early administration of the drug improves the chances of freedom from symptoms. As part of newborn screening, SMA has been screened for since 1 October 2021.

Ulrike Köhl, Frank Buchholz and Maren Henneken were on site at the BMBF meeting of Clusters4Future on May 31st in Berlin. It was the first time that all 7 future clusters of the first round met and had the opportunity to talk directly with BMBF and PtJ.
 
The exchange was open, critical and quite solution-oriented. We talked about our experiences at the start of the first implementation phase. It was also exciting to hear where the other clusters stand and what challenges they and their partners have to deal with. Many of them have the same issues as we do, mostly the inflexible budgetary constraints of the PtJ.
 
We learned that the progress report due in September will be evaluated by a jury, so it should be a good piece of self-presentation. Compared to the other clusters, we are doing quite well.
 
ProxiDrug, which is thematically closest to us, would like to organise a joint summer school next year. We very much like this idea and we would like to make use of such synergies!
 
We are very happy about the contacts made. Let's see what other possibilities of cooperation will open up.
