2023... Sneak preview

Having kicked off the new year with our public lecture series and Anja Feldmann from the TheraSTAR project on how Dresden researchers employ immune cells against cancer, we look forward to continuing this lecture series throughout the year with a number of other interesting topics in Leipzig and Dresden.

We all look forward to our consortium meeting and SAB meeting in September when all projects, platforms and hub will meet in presence to share their results and breakthroughs and to plan further ahead to our second funding phase. Save the date for September 11th and 12th!

We will continue to establish contacts with industry and to present our research at conferences and tradeshows in 2023 with our highlights in March and November being the Deutsche Biotechnologietage in Wiesbaden and BIO Europe in Munich.

Furthermore, we are creating ideas to stage a workshop on science communication and a pitching contest. We are also planning to meet with members of the Cluster4Future Proxidrugs.

Last but not least, we will again participate at the Long Night of Science and "Türen auf mit der Maus". We really enjoyed being part of both events last year, which were very successful and attracted a lot of visitors to our activites at the CRTD.

We are looking forward to an exciting year and most of all to meeting you again soon!

News from our projects

UltraCAR-T

The UltraCAR-T project is dedicated to the core topic of cellular immunotherapy with genetically modified CAR-T cells using virus-free gene-transfer technology based on proof-of-concept work performed in preclinical and clinical studies at the University of Würzburg.

The project is pursuing technologically advanced CAR-T products with therapeutic potential in hematology and oncology through the CAR-T biotech start-up TCURX GmbH and advanced clinical-grade manufacturing through Fraunhofer IZI.

In the context of the SaxoCell future cluster, the value chain for such advanced CAR-T products will be developed and exploited.

Events – Retrospect

Public lecture with Anja Feldmann

On February 10th, as part of our German language lecture series open to the public, Anja Feldmann from HZDR presented on how Dresden scientists use immune cells to fight cancer. Her research is part of the SaxoCell project TheraStar which aims to develop theranostic targets that significantly support both conventional CAR and universal adapter CAR technologies in our cluster. We thank Anja Feldmann and all participants who attended the lecture in the CRTD and online.

UniStem Day 2023 at CRTD

SaxoCell Hub members Luisa Brückner and Franziska Friebel-Viebach staged a workshop at this year's UniStemDay on March 10th. The workshop "Vom Labor zum Krankenbett: Wie werden Arzneimittel entwickelt?” targetted pupils from senior classes.

Luisa and Franziska captured their young audience by explaing how medicines are developed, and introduced them to SaxoCell's vision and research approaches.

SaxoCellCLINICS workshop "Klinische Studien mit ATMPs" in Leipzig

The SaxoCell Clinics workshop on March 16th and 17th was a great success! With about thirty participants present in Leipzig and ca. 100 participants online we were able to reach a large audience who wanted to learn how to set up and run a clinical trial, especially with regard to ATMP first-in-human studies.

The workshop covered all important topics from biostatistics (Dr. Dirk Hasenclever) to GMP-compliant ATMP production (Dr. Jörg Schäffner, IDT Biologika GmbH) and regulatory requirements. With experts from PEI (Bettina Ziegele), Landesdirektion Sachsen (Dr. Anne Lewerenz), KKS Dresden (Dr. Xina Grählert) and ZKS Leipzig (Dr. Peggy Houben) we spent two intensive days with very valuable input. An important further step to support the translation of our CGT projects into the clinic is done 💪

Thank you to the scientists who presented their great projects in the form of case studies: Dr. med. Vladan Vucinic (PhotoCAR study), Prof. Dr. med. Catharina Schütz (transplantation of thymic tissue), and PD Dr. med. Ralf Henkelmann (cartilage damage solutions).

Last but not least, we would like to thank the SaxoCell organizers Silke Gloaguen, Dr. Janine Kirchberg and Prof. Dr. med. Uwe Platzbecker at the University of Leipzig Medical Center!
