The image shows several coloured speech bubbles on a blue background. Two of the speech bubbles contain questions about democracy: ‘How do we have constructive conversations about democracy?’ and ‘What role do diversity and inclusion play in a democracy?’

EU Vet - a new project

One of our members, Alina Praun, has initiated an exciting new project aimed at bridging the gap between the complexity of European Union Vocational Education and Training (VET) policy and its practical implications for VET organisations and their staff.

The project focuses on developing learning units designed to demystify EU VET policy, making its core ideas and benefits more accessible to VET teachers and trainers. By illustrating the tools and frameworks central to EU VET policy, these materials aim to foster a deeper understanding of the European vision within the VET community and promote engagement with its initiatives.

This initiative underscores the importance of connecting abstract policy concepts with everyday practice, empowering educators to navigate and apply EU policies more effectively in their work.

Science in the City Center: The Reframe Space

How can science enter urban spaces and spark discussions beyond city centers? The Reframe Space tackled this challenge through a creative and interdisciplinary initiative. From October 28 to November 24, 2023, an empty shop in downtown Dresden was transformed into a vibrant workshop space. Conceived by the TUDiSC projects "Transformative Place-Making for Uncertain Futures," "Disrupt!Research," and "The Disruptivity of the Others in Urban Transformations," the concept was developed by a team including Leon Jank, Pauline Mai, Lenard Opeskin, and Daniel Peter.

Supported by Wir GESTALTEN DRESDEN, the project focused on geological and urban planning processes in Dresden, Johanngeorgenstadt, and the Zittau Mountains. The aim was to question and shift perception and planning processes, offering new perspectives on complex topics like structural transformation, extractivism, and governance.

The space became a workshop for architecture and geography students who explored these regions during field trips. Their experiences culminated in the exhibition "Hills, Heaps, Hope," inaugurated on November 21 with a closing event. The exhibits, curated with the help of the design team text-objekt-raum, narrated stories about human-environment relations, geology, and regional culture.

The Reframe Space demonstrated the significance of creating spaces that foster resonance across disciplines. When located in central urban areas, such initiatives enable meaningful transdisciplinary engagement. The takeaway: we need more projects like this!

The TU Dresden Writing Center and the SLUB are offering a joint series of events, tackling a broad spectrum of topics such as teacher training, excerpting and AI supported writing.

After initially being postponed we are pleased to bring to your attention the new date for an event that seeks to present attractive funding opportunities for the humanities and social sciences. The event is primarily aimed at academics who have had little or nothing to do with acquiring third-party funding to date. Participants can expect to be given an insight into national and international third-party funding, as well as an introduction to the relevant contact persons at TU Dresden and the available services and support options.

Location Tip: VW Future Mobility Campus

As a company that positions itself between the disruptive consequences of the energy transition, and transformative agency, the VW Gläserne Manufaktur offers a stimulating platform for reflection on the subject of energy and mobility on rainy weekends.

Moreover, for anyone looking for a location for conferences or team building occasions, the VW Future Mobility Campus could well be an interesting option. As well as providing the space and technology required for such events, the location offers group tours around the campus with information and data on VW’s work and vision in the area of future mobility. This could therefore provide an interesting and alternative form of excursion for a project team that wishes to seek dialogue with various sectors, viewpoints and practices.
