Science in the City Center: The Reframe Space
How can science enter urban spaces and spark discussions beyond city centers? The Reframe Space tackled this challenge through a creative and interdisciplinary initiative. From October 28 to November 24, 2023, an empty shop in downtown Dresden was transformed into a vibrant workshop space. Conceived by the TUDiSC projects "Transformative Place-Making for Uncertain Futures," "Disrupt!Research," and "The Disruptivity of the Others in Urban Transformations," the concept was developed by a team including Leon Jank, Pauline Mai, Lenard Opeskin, and Daniel Peter.
Supported by Wir GESTALTEN DRESDEN, the project focused on geological and urban planning processes in Dresden, Johanngeorgenstadt, and the Zittau Mountains. The aim was to question and shift perception and planning processes, offering new perspectives on complex topics like structural transformation, extractivism, and governance.
The space became a workshop for architecture and geography students who explored these regions during field trips. Their experiences culminated in the exhibition "Hills, Heaps, Hope," inaugurated on November 21 with a closing event. The exhibits, curated with the help of the design team text-objekt-raum, narrated stories about human-environment relations, geology, and regional culture.
The Reframe Space demonstrated the significance of creating spaces that foster resonance across disciplines. When located in central urban areas, such initiatives enable meaningful transdisciplinary engagement. The takeaway: we need more projects like this!
