Disruption - Systems of Uncertainty and Radicality
Disruption is a much debated concept, especially in light of current political developments. As a pioneer in disruption research,
TUDiSC provides scientific expertise to contextualise political events and assess the appropriateness of the disruption concept.
Professor Marianne Kneuer, an expert on political systems and principal investigator of the
DiDis project, analysed Donald Trump's actions on Deutschlandfunk radio. She approaches the concept of disruption from an actor-centred perspective and highlights the various, sometimes strategic, objectives of the former US president. She clearly classifies his actions as unconstitutional - directed against the separation of powers and fundamental societal values.
Professor Lars Koch, spokesperson for TUDiSC and author of "
The Great Disruptor", interprets the increasing disruptions as a symptom of a society experiencing a sense of overwhelming complexity. However, in what he describes as a "general hum of agitation" (allgemeines Rauschen der Aufgereghtheit) , critical practices - such as those found in literature and theatre - remain unheard. They are lost in an affective mode in which the ability to shape the future is abandoned, reduced to adaptation strategies.
