Password management with Passwork available at our School

Passwork makes handling company passwords easy. Employees can quickly find the right passwords as all data is securely stored on your server, with all user rights, activities and changes managed by the administrator. Passwork is now in use at TU Dresden and is being rolled out step by step. From May 05, 2025 this password manager is officially available at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Switching VPN services to eduVPN for better security

VPN access to connect to the TU Dresden network will be gradually migrated from Cisco Secure Client (Cisco AnyConnect), OpenConnect, OpenVPN and Tunnelblick to the eduVPN open source system. Authentication will then be carried out via the central login service (Shibboleth) using the ZIH login, access being thus secured by two-factor authentication (2FA). After parallel operation, the existing AnyConnect and OpenVPN services will be discontinued at the end of May. All other VPNs follow until the end of 2025.

On the road: Study on everyday transport in urban areas reveals shift in mobility behavior

The research project “Mobility in Cities – SrV” uses an extensive household survey to regularly collect data on the mobility behavior of the residents of German cities. In the 2023 survey, more than 280,000 people in around 500 municipalities answered questions on their mobility behavior. Researchers at the Chair of Mobility System Planning at TU Dresden have identified a clear trend towards increased walking and cycling. The next survey conducted by the “Mobility in Cities” study will take place in 2028, the anniversary year of TUD.

Civil engineers develop crab trap in Dresden

As part of the international research project CLANCY, civil engineers in Dresden are developing a special crab trap to capture and study the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). The aim of the project is to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity in the North Sea region, in particular by researching ways of managing the mitten crab.

Bridges of tomorrow: Federal Minister Wissing opened AI research bridge for TUD-coordinated joint project in Bautzen

On March 19, 2025, Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister of Digital and Transport (BMDV), together with State Secretary Barbara Meyer, District Administrator Udo Witschas, Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Rector of TUD Dresden University of Technology, Prof. Steffen Marx, Director of TUD's Institute of Concrete Structures, and Jörg Drews from the project partner Hentschke Bau GmbH, opened a 45-meter-long and 4.5-meter-wide research bridge in Bautzen. The research platform openLAB is equipped with the latest sensor technology, designed to enable seamless real-time monitoring. The prestressed concrete bridge is part of the research project Automated assessment of monitoring data for infrastructure constructions (IDA-KI), which is coordinated by TUD and funded by the BMDV as part of the Modernity Fund (mFUND) innovation initiative.

The future of railway transport: cooperation agreement with the German Centre for Rail Traffic Research (DZSF)

The “Friedrich List” Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden and the German Centre for Rail Traffic Research (DSZF) are joining forces to promote early-career researchers in the field of railway transport. With this objective in mind, the two partners have signed an agreement on cooperation in teaching and research. It comprises a series of measures for promoting young scientists in railway research. The focus is on the joint supervision of doctoral students.

Startup Campus Alliance established with universities in Saxony and Thuringia under the coordination of TUD|excite

On April 9, 2025, eight universities from Saxony and two from Thuringia officially founded the Startup Campus Alliance at Leipzig University. The goal of the non-profit association is to promote entrepreneurship and start-up culture in the long term and establish Saxony and Thuringia as the leading deep-tech start-up region in Germany.

Mobility for all: A digital knowledge map for more participation in public transport of the future

In the European joint project SINFONICA, researchers in traffic and transportation psychology are developing a platform to promote inclusion in cooperative, connected and automated transport systems. In an interactive digital knowledge map, the requirements of people with and without mobility impairments for public transport are to be mapped in order to achieve greater fairness in transport in the future.

Bauwelt Award 2025 for Tim Mahn: project space in former restroom

Architect Tim Mahn was awarded the Bauwelt Award "First Works" 2025 for his first architectural work. Since 2020, Tim Mahn has been running his own architectural office in Halle (Saale). Additionally, he works as a research associate at the Chair of Structural Design in the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape at TU Dresden, involved in both research and teaching. He is also culturally active through projects in associations for urban redevelopment, monument preservation, and art.

Alumnus of the month for April 2025

Tom Siegel has always wanted to combine technology and business. TUD was just down the road from his high school in the southern suburb of Dresden. In keeping with the motto “See, the good is so close by”, he enrolled in industrial engineering and management, specializing in mechanical engineering. The wide range of high-quality academic programs available also contributed to his decision to study in his hometown.

Alumna of the month May 2025

For Cora Pfarre, studying anything other than Forest Sciences in Tharandt was never an option. Since graduating, she has lived and worked in the United Kingdom and has been a department head at Maydencroft Ltd. for several years. As Head Forester, she provides environmental and ecological services to companies across the country. As a TUD alumni ambassador, she supports the exchange between the two countries and is also happy to share her expertise with her alma mater.

Dresden Nexus Conference 2025: The global Resource Nexus Community in Dresden

The diverse program of the DNC 2025, held from April 8 to 10, 2025, once again focused on key topics of sustainable resource use. These ranged from innovative approaches to agri-food system, measures to preserve biodiversity through efficient resource use, to future-oriented strategies for dealing with water scarcity and climate impacts. The conference made an important contribution to the 50^th anniversary of the United Nations University (UNU) and also marked the 10^th anniversary of the conference itself.
