“The tropics are complex”

The English-language Master’s degree program in Tropical Forestry celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025. Tropical forestry studies have been offered in Tharandt for a much longer time.

Lukas Gießen focuses his teaching on political and anthropocentric governance issues in dealing with forests worldwide. He sees himself more in the field of management training for future decision-makers.

An Alumnus' Research Work Helps to Boost Poverty Alleviation in China

Professor Jianfeng Zhangs research shows that developing forestry can help promote economic growth. Main activities are devoted to silviculture and degraded land ecological rehabilitation, especially saline soil amelioration and non-point source pollution control in water source areas. As well, he initiates the probe on ecology of human settlement.

Dr. Pyi Soe Aung from Myanmar

Dr. Pyi Soe Aung first earned a degree in Tropical Forestry and later received his Ph.D. in Forest Sciences from TU Dresden. Today, as Conservation Director of the WWF Myanmar Program, he develops conservation strategies in the areas of wildlife, forest restoration, freshwater, climate, and inclusive conservation.

Tumwesigye Patience from Uganda

Tumwesigye Naamara Patience first participated in the CIPSEM program at TUD before enrolling in the master’s program in Tropical Forestry. Today, she promotes forest restoration and agroforestry, as well as community projects aimed at securing sustainable livelihoods and addressing climate change.

Marcelo Rezende from Brazil

For Marcelo Rezende, forestry has always been a passion. Today, he leads capacity development and knowledge management for sustainable dryland management at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome.

Vanessa Ospina from Colombia

Vanessa Ospina decided to study at TUD after hearing a lecture by Prof. Jürgen Pretzsch in Colombia. Today, she coordinates forest conservation projects with indigenous communities in six Amazonian departments to reduce deforestation and promote sustainable development.

Deborah Sue from Fiji

After earning her bachelor’s degree in Australia, Deborah Sue completed the TUD master’s program in Tropical Forestry. Since returning to Fiji, she has been advising companies and NGOs in the Asia-Pacific region on the sustainable management of tropical forests.

The TUD also includes the external campus in Tharandt. This is home to degree programs such as forestry sciences and tropical forestry. Anne and Sandra show Florian around the campus and reveal what else Tharandt has to offer beyond student life. (presented in German)
