Five approved Clusters of Excellence, including two with participation from the faculty

Of the six research projects submitted by TUD Dresden University of Technology, five Clusters of Excellence were selected for further or new funding. This is a great success for TUD as a whole. From the faculty's perspective, we are particularly proud that, for the first time, researchers from the faculty - Edeltraud Günther, Dominik Möst and Samanthi Dijkstra-Silva - are involved in two of the approved clusters.

Outstanding publications

Once again, researchers from the faculty have succeeded in publishing articles in top international journals. The paper "Lifetime Consequences of Lost Instructional Time in the Classroom: Evidence from Shortened School Years", written by Kamila Cygan-Rehm was placed in the Journal of Labor Economics (to the news).

Susanne Strahringer and Martin Wiener published the articel "Where are the processes in IS research on digital transformation? A critical literature review and future research directions" in the Journal of Strategic Information Systems (JSIS) (to the news).

The article "Teamwork Under Adversity: An Integrative Review and Future Research Agenda", in which Helene Müller is involved, has been published in Academy of Management Annals.

Faculty Day with inaugural lecture and award ceremonies

On Faculty Day on May 21, we listened to the inaugural lecture by Kamila Cygan-Rehm who took an econometric look at political measures in her presentation. This was followed by a series of award ceremonies: The winners of the Dr. Feldbausch Prize for outstanding dissertations, the Dr. Händel Prize, the Professor Hilbert Publication Prize and the Distinguished Research Fellows Program were honored.

Graduation ceremony and summer party

At this year's graduation ceremony we welcomed 170 graduates. The ceremony in the lecture hall TRE/PHSY/H was followed by a summer party on the large lawn at the Potthoff building in perfect weather. Big thanks to everyone who was there and especially to our co-organizers: the FSR WiWi, the VWI Hochschulgruppe Dresden e.V. and nexus e.V.!

Welcome!

New holder of the Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Intelligent Systems and Services

We are pleased to welcome Patrick Zschech as the new holder of the Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Intelligent Systems and Services at the faculty as of May 1, 2025.

Patrick Zschech completed his doctorate on "Data Science and Analytics in Industrial Maintenance" at TUD in 2020. This was followed by positions as Assistant Professor at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg and as Professor of Business Information Systems, esp. Intelligent Information Systems and Processes, at Leipzig University.

New in the secretariat of the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Logistics: Silvia Hack

We warmly welcome Silvia Hack (on the right in the picture) who has been working in the secretariat of the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Logistics, as a parental leave replacement for Christin Peschel since June 2, 2025. In the last few years, Silvia Hack has been working as a team assistant in a patent law firm.

New in the computing Lab: Fritz Seltmann

From July 1, Fritz Seltmann will be joining the team of the Computing Lab. After graduating from high school, he trained as an IT specialist for system integration at the Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden (cfaed) at TUD, which he recently completed successfully.

Research news

Restart of the Organization and Management Group

Stefan Razinskas, Ann-Sophie Lauterbach and Martina Pieperhoff would like to revive the research workshop Organization & Management at the faculty. The idea is to create an open, cross-faculty platform that can be used, for example, to present current working papers or R&Rs, to receive feedback in a familiar space or to invite international guests.

Participation of Dix Gräubig in a workshop and conference on Coincidence Analysis in Copenhagen

From May 19-22, 2025 Dix Gräubig (Chair of Business Information Systems, esp. Information Systems in Industry and Trade) attented an international workshop and conference on Coincidence Analysis (CNA) at the National Research Centre for the Working Environment (NFA) in Copenhagen. The research stay served to deepen methodological knowledge in CNA, an innovative method within the Configurational Comparative Methods (CCMs).

2nd place for Daniel Vrankar at the CASSINI Space Hackathon

At the CASSINI Space Hackathon of the EU Agency for the Space Program (EUSPA), Daniel Vrankar (Chair of Business Administration, esp. Finance and Financial Technology), together with team colleagues from the Czech Republic and Finland, took second place in the Finnish preliminary round with a prize money of €1,500. Their project: an app that uses current satellite data to promote individual well-being, in line with the motto of this year's hackathon: “Space for Well-being”.

Distinguished Research Fellows visiting Dresden

In May and June, several of our Distinguished Research Fellows are and were at the faculty for research stays. Sven Anders (University of Alberta) and Ciprian Domnisoru (Aalto School of Business) were honored as Fellows 2025 by the Dean and their hosts on Faculty Day. Oliver Krancher (IT University Copenhagen) was a guest in the Business Information Systems group. He was already honored as a Distinguished Research Fellow in 2024.

Research stay of Juho Lindman and Aleksandre Asatiani

At the end of April, two researchers from the University of Gothenburg visited TU Dresden: Juho Lindman and Aleksandre Asatiani. As part of their visit, both scholars gave a research talk under the theme Reimagining Work and Digital Technologies. Aleksandre Asatiani presented on "When Autonomy Goes Too Far: Sociotechnical Envelopment for Responsible AI Agent Control", while Juho Lindman discussed "Municipal Open Data from Sweden" - a topic of particular relevance given the ongoing Open Data project with the City of Dresden.

Teaching and research stay of Sofia Tsarsitalidou and Antonis Adam

Sofia Tsarsitalidou (University of Peloponnese) and Antonis Adam (University of Ioannina) were guests at the Chair of Economics, esp. Public Economics in May. Together with Prof. Dr. Marcel Thum, Antonis Adam held the seminar “Conflict and Sanctions” for students. Sofia Tsarsitalidou presented her latest research findings on “Remittances and Political Institutions” in the Brown Bag Seminar.

Participation of Samanthi Dijkstra-Silva in the NETWORK STUDIO on Sustainability in Warwick

The third international NETWORK STUDIO took place at the University of Warwick from June 3-5, 2025. The focus was on sustainability and brought together researchers from interdisciplinary fields and from three institutions: TU Dresden, the Free University of Brussels (VUB) and the University of Warwick.

Next steps in the strategic cooperation between TU Dresden and IITM

The Chair of Innovation and Technology Management and TUD|excite under the direction of Andreas Pinkwart and the India Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) were able to strengthen and further develop their cooperation. Start-ups from Dresden and Madras, India, hosted a joint stand at the DeepTech trade fair GITEX Europe 2025 in Berlin. The partner institutions presented collaborations on panels and start-ups concluded their first contracts for market expansion.

Projects

Making open data more visible and usable: Launch of an online survey

The teams of Susanne Strahringer and Martin Wiener are currently conducting a large-scale, questionnaire-based survey as part of the Smart City Dresden pilot project. Their aim is to investigate which factors significantly influence the use of open data portals and the extent to which users' personal characteristics favor or inhibit the initial use and reuse of open data.

Active TEP now an official medical devise

Emily Hickmann, research associate in the Digital Health Research Group, is working on her doctoral project to develop the Active TEP app which aims to give patients the knowledge, skills and confidence to return to everyday life with their new hip in a confident and active way. Active TEP has been available in the app stores for a few weeks now.

Thomas Günther and Sebastian Oelrich published a book on humor in accounting. "Accounting Jokes. This Joke's on You" contains jokes which the authors collected as part of a survey of international and German-speaking academics conducted in 2024 as part of a larger research project.

On May 6, 2025, Sabine Kuhlmann (University of Potsdam & National Regulatory Control Council), Sarah Necker (FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg & Ludwig Erhard ifo Research Center for Social Market Economy and Institutional Economics) and Christian Leßmann (Chair of Economics, esp. International Economics) discussed in a new edition of 60 Minutes what is important when it comes to reducing bureaucracy in public administration.

Alumni careers

Uwe Wieland new member of the Industry 4.0 Research Advisory Board

Uwe Wieland, alumnus of our faculty, has been accepted as a new member of the Industry 4.0 Research Advisory Board and will contribute his expertise in the development of data-driven business models and hybrid AI architectures for industry.

Uwe Wieland completed his doctorate at the faculty from 2012-2015. He then went on to work for Robotron Datenbank-Software GmbH where he helped to set up the Industrial IoT Division. Today, he works as Senior Director Software Product Development & AI-driven Solutions at Volkswagen and holds an Honorary Chair at the University of Applied Sciences Dresden.

Katja Soyez elected new director of DHSN Riesa

Katja Soyez was elected Director of DHSN Riesa | Duale Hochschule Sachsen at the beginning of June and will start her five-year term of office on July 1, 2025.

She studied Business Administration at the faculty and then worked as a research associate at the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Marketing, before completing her doctorate in 2012. Kaja Soyez has been working in Riesa since 2014 and, in addition to her work as a professor, was also Head of Studies and Deputy Director.

FOSTER.AI - Apply now for funding for student research!

Students and lecturers can now apply for funding (€5,000-25,000) for research-oriented learning projects - from student research projects to summer schools and tutorials. New this year: the thematic focus: Artificial Intelligence. Funding is available for projects in which AI is either the subject of research or is used specifically to provide support.

Application period for the Deutschlandstipendium starts in July

The application period for the Deutschlandstipendium 2025/26 starts in July! For two weeks (from July 1 to July 15), TUD students can apply to receive a monthly grant of €300. The Deutschlandstipendium supports high-performing students who are also strongly committed to society.

14th ifo Dresden Workshop on Labor Economics and Social Policy

On May 22 & 23, the Dresden Branch of ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Department of Business and Economics at TU Dresden conducted the now 14th ifo Dresden Workshop on Labor Economics and Social Policy! Like the years before, young researchers from all over the world presented their current research and discussed it with their peers and seniors. Topics ranged from wage subsidies and occupational choice to health and family economics.

PhD Workshop with Rodrigo Lozano and Maria Barreira-Gen

Rodrigo Lozano is a Dresden Senior Fellow 2024 and visited the faculty again this year. In addition to continuing his research exchange with Remmer Sassen and his team, he held a PhD course on Epistemology, qualitative research, and quantitative research together with Maria Barreiro-Gen in May, which met with a very positive response from the doctoral candidates on the Saxon Doctoral Program in Management Research.

Grand opening of the TUD|excite Space and TUD|excite Innovation Hub

On May 16, 2025, the new rooms of TUD|excite were opened together with the TUD|excite Innovation Hub. The TUD|excite Space offers new innovative spaces to work on excellent transfer services. With the support of the TUD's knowledge architects and the interior design office ONWS, a unique new work concept has been implemented here.

Review ENERDAY 2025 - 19th International Conference on Energy Economics and Technology

This year's "ENERDAY - International Conference on Energy Economics and Technology" marks another successful conference in the 19-year history of our international energy economics conference. Around 100 participants from science and industry gathered on April 4, 2025 under the motto "Shaping Markets, Shaping Futures: Renewables and Flexibility in Modern Energy Systems" to learn more about current topics through exciting presentations, discuss research results and, of course, to exchange ideas with each other.

News from the Dean's Office

Project day with the computing lab and secretariats

On June 5, 2025, the second joint project day of the Dean's Office, the computing lab and the faculty secretariats took place. After a brunch at Café "Alex" we went to the Frauenkirche to see the dome.
All in all, it was an enriching and team-building day that strengthened our sense of community and provided a great opportunity for team building.

Construction work at the Faculty

From the beginning of August, extensive construction work will be carried out in the north wing of the Hülße Building, 5th floor. The chairs located there will then move into interim rooms until probably the end of February 2026. The Chair of Business Administration, esp. Industrial Management will move to the 2nd floor of the Tillich Building at the beginning of July, while the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Marketing will move into interim premises at Nürnberger Ei. The Junior Professorship of Business Administration, esp. Management Science already moved to the first floor of the Georg Schumann Building (B-Wing).

Furthermore, the toilet behind the Festsaal is currently being dismantled and a storage room will be created. For this reason, the Festsaal is only available to a limited extent. The construction work should be completed by the end of September.
